Steak

by Outside Owl
(Bedford, PA)

What you need:
Steak
Seasonings
Grill or something to cook your steak on

This is the best first-night meal for backpacking. Add any seasoning or spice to your steak the night before, and then bag it, and put it in the freezer.

Add your steak to your pack right before you leave, so it stays colder longer.

I always double or tripple bag, to prevent a mess.

The steak should stay cold enough until you get to your first night's camp.

The best way to cook this is over a campfire, but you can always cook it in a pan if you can't manage a good fire or grill.

Just think BBQ, and it's a great first night meal!

Side dishes could include instant mashed potatos, just measure out your quantity add garlic powder at home.

Grill for steak
by: tdonohue

I recently came across an aluminum Grill guard at home depot. This is designed to go over a standard BBQ grill to reduce cleaning. (Some people have more money than energy.)
This is a self-contained grill which is very light and rolls up very small. When anchored with rocks, it makes a perfect pack grill.

Try a couple of strip steaks with Argentian Chimichurri sauce:
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup minced fresh parsley
1 clove garlic
2 minced shallots
1 teaspoon minced basil, thyme or oregano, or mixture
Salt and pepper to taste

Perhaps even consider roasting some red potatoes if there's a good wood supply.

Throw on a some zucchini with olive oil and lemon pepper on the grill.

A nice Malbec decanted into a Platypus bottle is a great accompaniment.

When you get your base pack weight down to 13Lbs you can afford to splurge on overnight trips.

Thanks Outside Owl
by: Laura

I've done this. It makes a great first night meal. If outdoor fires are acceptable in your hiking area, the creative use of a few well-placed rocks and heavy duty aluminum foil will work as a cooking surface. This way you don't have to carry any sort of grill.

In places where I can't build a fire, I have cut the steak into strips, seasoned and frozen as you suggest. Then sliced an onion and put in another bag. When I reach camp, I cook the steak and onion together over my camp stove. Good stuff too.

Mighty nice after a long day hiking. You might have to pick up your walking stick to defend yourself from your hiking buddies when they begin to smell it cooking.

Great submission. Thanks again.
