Backpacking Hammock
A backpacking hammock system definitely qualifies as an ultralight shelter often weighing just under one pound. This shelter system includes a sleeping area, integrated mesh mosquito netting and an overhead tarp for rain protection.
Advantages
In addition to being an extremely light choice, advantages include the ability to camp anywhere you can find two sturdy trees. You no longer have to find a level area covered with soft forest duff to make a comfortable bed. Because an unlevel camping site is no longer a concern, you will not find yourself sliding downhill in your sleep as you might with shelters erected on the ground. This sleeping system can also be used as a chair. This means no more sitting on hard, possibly wet ground in camp. Also, if it is raining during meal time, you can sit comfortably with the rain fly over your head and enjoy a dry dining experience.
Low Impact Choice
This system is extremely low impact. Since it is erected above the ground, there is no compaction or destruction of the forest floor. Using wide attachment straps and/or multiple straps can eliminate damage to tree bark. This makes a hammock an environmentally friendly choice. Disadvantages
Disadvantages include the necessity of camping among sturdy trees. Some hikers have difficulty sleeping in a not-quite-flat position. However, sleeping slightly off-center and at an angle can minimize this, even allowing for a side-lying sleeping position.

Another consideration is temperature. Due to the nature of its construction there is no insulation beneath the occupant and body heat tends to escape from below. This cooler sleeping situation can be a welcome relief when camping in hot, humid conditions. However, in colder conditions, this can become a distinct disadvantage. Heat loss can be diminished by carrying a closed-cell pad for insulation, adding only a small amount of weight. Is It For Me?
If your typical campsite is among sturdy trees, you will be hard-pressed to find a lighter shelter than the backpacking hammock.
